Our western South Africa Cape extensions, combined with our eastern South Africa tours, can produce up to an incredible 500 bird and 50 mammal species, including many South African endemics and near-endemics. Commencing in Cape Town, widely considered one of the world’s most beautiful cities, we set out to explore the breathtaking Cape Peninsula, the succulent Tanqua Karoo, West Coast National Park and teeming pelagic waters. Cape targets include the comical African Penguin, Black Harrier, Ludwig’s Bustard, elusive Cinnamon-breasted Warbler, attractive Victorin’s Warbler, Karoo Lark, stunning Orange-breasted and Southern Double-collared Sunbirds, Cape Sugarbird, Protea, Cape and Forest Canaries, Cape Siskin, Cape Bulbul and Cape Rockjumper, the last belonging to a family that is endemic to southern Africa. Regional endemics could include Rufous-eared Warbler, Southern Boubou, Cape Batis, Cape Grassbird, Karoo Prinia, Karoo Eremomela, Cape Weaver, Fiscal Flycatcher, Namaqua Warbler, Cape Spurfowl and Olive Thrush. An unforgettable experience is definitely a pelagic trip out to sea from Cape Town, whereby finding a fishing vessel could produce literally thousands of birds in its wake. Indian and Atlantic Yellow-nosed, Black-browed and Shy Albatrosses, Cape and White-chinned Petrels, Southern and Northern Giant Petrels and Cape Gannet are regularly encountered.

Gareth was very considerate of all tour members and kept everything on schedule. He went out of his way to find bird species of particular interest to those on the tour and is a very enthusiastic about birding.
"I know that RBT has run this tour multiple times for many years, and it shows - the itinerary is flawlessly geared to include a wide range of ecosystems to maximize the number of bird and animal species possible, the accommodations are lovely to luxurious, and the office communications are unfailingly courteous, friendly, and responsive. I have traveled with Rockjumper before, but not with Doug McCulloch. I was very impressed with his birding skills, his determination and persistence in making sure everyone saw all of the important endemics and all of the most-hoped-for species, and his knowledge of the history, the politics, and the ecology of South Africa. He managed the usual trip hiccups (tire puncture, adverse weather, unexpected road closures) with an unflappable grace and good humor, and keep us all on track throughout the trip. In short, it was great fun, we saw an enormous number of amazingly beautiful and scarce birds and animals, and I am truly glad my first trip to South Africa was with Doug as trip leader.
This was a trip of firsts for me - first time in Africa, first time on a birding tour, and first time travelling solo on an international trip. I couldn't have asked for a better experience or a better guide. The primary reason the experience was so positive was due to the efforts of our guide, Gareth Robbins. He is an excellent birder and was determined to accommodate all of our wishlists. He was not satisfied unless everyone in the group got good looks at a bird, and went to great lengths to ensure this. His enthusiasm was contagious and set the tone for a fun and pleasant group dynamic. As an added bonus, Gareth had me, and the rest of our group, breaking out in laughter on many occasions! I look forward to participating in a future Rockjumper tour (and hopefully one where Gareth is the guide!).
This was my first experience with Rockjumper - it far exceeded my expectations. In fact, it far exceeded my experiences with other tours. I don't know how anybody could have been better than Andre Bernon. He was always professional, organized, and I felt completely safe with his driving. His knowledge of birds, animal behavior, the country, the history, goes without saying - but really it was his personality that made the trip. I so enjoyed his sense of humor. I know it is an old-fashioned word, but he was a complete gentleman - showing respect and courtesy to everyone but always with a twinkle in his eye and ready to either hand out or be on the receiving end of a joke. We just plain had fun on this trip! When time and money allows, I would happily go on another trip with him.
Gareth Robbins is an excellent guide and did a fantastic job managing the group and our expectations. He has a wealth of knowledge and provided information on various topics, including the flora, fauna, culture and everything in between.
